3.17.08  New Times Film
From reviewer Scott Hamilton: "Your monkey is safe in my El Camino" is my favorite quote of Tyrone Huff's short, Chiles. This is a lighthearted film about a Hispanic girl bringing her new boyfriend to dinner at her very traditional parents' house. Her father and mother mostly speak Spanish, and her boyfriend Randal is a well-dressed black man. Even though this is a lighthearted film, it deals with some heavy issues. What I liked about it was the way it dealt with prejudice and racism. It wasn't your traditional situation with a black and white couple. It threw a little change in there with the Hispanic and black dynamic--the icebreaker being a chile eat-off between the hard-nosed father and the new boyfriend. The film leaves you without a happy ending. Things get better between the family and Randal, but not resolved. It definitely had a non-Hollywood look and resolve. I guess that's why I like short films so much.
